The classic game of Baccarat is almost certainly the most elegant and sophisticated of the variety of gambling games you can find at online casinos. The style of the game even reaches a unique dress code for the dealers at the Baccarat table.

Baccarat is a fantastic gambling game to play because there is not much decision making in it besides the amount of money you wish to gamble on.

Baccarat dates back to the Middle Ages and is said to have been played with a Tarot deck. Invented in Italy, it soon made its way to France where it was favored among the upper class aristocracy. Later the game split to European baccarat, and a French game that goes by the name 'chemin de fer'.

Chemin de fer is very much like baccarat as it's played in American casinos today. The difference is one of the players banks the game instead of the casino. The title of banker rotates around the table in a manner similar to the dice at a Craps table. The interesting detail is that the casino is taking no risk here by simply charging a fee from each banker.

The Baccarat we know today originated in Great Britain and was then passed along to South America and finally to Nevada. The renowned Dunes casino launched baccarat in the late 50's, and from there it passed onto the world wide web.

Baccarat is a simple game. There are no decisions or options. No level of talent is required for either player or dealer. Players may sit in any open seat at the table, seating position does not influence the game in any way. Each seat matches a number on the layout, one through 15. Three dealers are in charge of every table. The dealer standing between positions one and 15 is known as the "caller" and runs the game as cards are dealt from the shoe.

Each player gets a turn to handle the shoe. The player must gamble the bank when he has the shoe, but any player may reject the shoe and it passes right along from player to player. There is no advantage or disadvantage in dealing the cards, it is merely a formality and part of the atmosphere of the game.

The caller accepts the cards from the player with the shoe, places them in the suitable boxes and then calls for another card or declares the winner, according to the firm rules of the game.

Players bet by placing chips in the numbered box facing their seat. Bets may be made on the player or bank, and both are paid off at even money. In most games bets range from as low as $20 to as high as $2,000 maximum. After the winner is announced the other dealers at the table pay off the winning bets and collect from the losers. If the bank was the winner, players that won must pay a 5% commission on their winnings (for example: if a player had a $100 bet on the bank and won, $5 would be owed to the house). Instead of collecting this surcharge after each game, a record of what is owed by each player is kept. The gamblers pay the final charge after the finish of a shoe. After the entire content of the shoe has been dealt, all eight decks are thoroughly shuffled and replaced in the shoe.
