 Craps

Many Hollywood movies show a game of Craps every time a casino appears because Craps is an essential casino game. Of the many gambling games available online it is probably the most elegant casino game.

Even though Craps looks like an elaborate and complicated game it is highly entertaining after you learn how to play. Read the rules of gambling games like Craps at online directories.

"Craps," comes from the French pronunciation of the word, "Crabs," a nickname for the prior game of Hazard. Developed in the 1700's, Hazard was played by members of the European upper class before arriving to America through the French Louisiana colony of Arcadia.

By 1813, Bernard de Mandeville of New Orleans took the game of hazard, simplified it, and changed the game into the first version of Craps. His version of Hazard traveled up the Mississippi River on steamboats, spreading throughout the United States. Mandeville's Craps had one major flaw; the game was exposed to the use of fixed dice due to its betting rules. John H. Winn fixed the problem by introducing the possibility for players to bet 'right' or 'wrong' in the layout of the Craps table, including a space for 'Don't Pass' bets. His adjustments transformed the game, and made it possible for players to bet for or against the roller.

Some think Craps have originated from soldiers of the Roman Legions playing with pig knucklebones shaped into cubes at the time of the Holy Roman Empire. They would "roll the bones" onto their shields for entertainment.

World War II also witnessed soldiers using Craps in its modern form as entertainment, which gained vast popularity as a way for them to take a break from war.

With time Craps lost much of its popularity as slot machines and other gambling games took the center stage and pulled in the majority of gamblers. Only recently, Craps has shown signs of making a comeback. Technological advances, such as the option of playing Craps online, have also contributed to the return.

In casino Craps, the players set their bets and the casino bank "covers" them. In addition to covering every player's bet, the casino-banked Craps game offers many other types of proposition bets. These bets, along with the basic "pass" and "don't pass" bets, will be explained.

There are four people actively running the game. The boxman, who sits behind the middle of the table, keeps a watch over the game. The two dealers on each side of him pay off the winners and collect the losers' chips. Every dealer handles all the players on his side. The table is divided by the center box of proposition bets and also by the stickman, who stands on the players' side of the table.

The stickman is in charge of the dice and the pace of the game. After checking all bets are down, the stickman presents a few sets of dice to the shooter. That player selects a pair of dice and rolls them across the table so that they hit the wall at the opposite end. If, on the first throw you make a 7 or 11, you've rolled a "natural" and you win. What you win is the equivalent amount of chips you have bet on the pass line.

If you roll a 2, 3 or 12 on your first throw, that is called "Craps" and you lose. The dealer picks up your pass-line bet. However, the shooter continues to roll until he "sevens out."

If, on the first roll, you shoot a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, that is your established "box point." The object then is to keep rolling the dice until you hit that number again. You lose if you roll a seven before making your box point.
