The history of gambling is largely unknown. It is hard to estimate exactly at what point in the history of time man started gambling as a form of entertainment but there are specific games from specific cultures that go back thousands of years. For instance the Chinese have ancient card games such as Pai Gow that date back thousands of years. The reason such games came about in the first place was to create lottery type funds in order to funnel money into the Chinese army.
Gambling has been used as a vehicle to support armies that were in dire need of money after going through costly battles. But gambling has also been less political in the past and has often been centered around entertainment. The roots of games like Poker and Blakjack are thought to have originated in Europe with possible roots in Persia. The history of gambling tells a tale or transformation and games have changes over hundreds, if not thousands of years as they pass from one generation to another and even from one culture to another.
The Europeans brought games like Poker to America and introduced gambling to the populace as a form of casino entertainment. Originally gambling was only enjoyed in saloons, bars and entertainment venues of the time but soon the steam boat casino became a popular way to gamble. Games like baccarat and roulette also find their roots in Europe but caught on with much popularity in America. So much so that new rules and versions were created as can be seen with American Roulette and European Roulette.
When it comes to the history of gambling there is no game with as long a history as poker. This game has so many variations that it may be technically impossible to know just how many exist as it has changed so many times. Different regions produce different variations as exemplified by games such as Texas Hold'em and Omaha hi lo.
