Directions Research, a research company based in Cincinatti has recently conducted an online survey set to examine the gambling habits in the US. The study was not commissioned by the gambling industry; nonetheless, it reinforces the findings of similar studies conducted in recent months. Directions Research surveyed 1,085 people on the various topics in an attempt to measure their gambling interest.
The study reveals that 67% of Americans over the age of 18 have gambled at least once on either casino games or sports, over the course of the past year. Moreover, 60% of those belonging to this group answered that they gambled on casino games; 40% gambled on card games and 30% spent money on sports gambling.
Of those who answered that engage in sports gambling, 78% wager on NFL; 45% on horse racing; 36% on College Football; 26% on College Basketball; 22% on MLB and 20% on NBA. When asked to name their preferred venue for gambling, 77% answered that they frequent land based gambling resorts; 18% at the race track; 10% at online gambling sites; 7% at a church and 4% with bookmakers.
When asked to describe how often they gamble, 59% answered that they tend to gamble one time at most, in a period of three months; 23% answered that they gamble one every 2-3 months; 9% gamble once a month; 5% gamble once every 2-3 weeks and another 5% answered that they gamble at lest once per week.
The gambling study also examined the ration of men in comparison to women when it comes to gambling. The findings revealed that nearly two-thirds of both men and women gamble at least once a year. The study also examined the relation between a person’s income to his gambling habits, revealing that 53% of the people who earn less than $25K annually, are in the habit of gambling at least once a year. This figure is a bit surprising considering that two thirds of those who earn between $25K and $100K answered that they the same.
