- Saturday, 8 Apr 2006
The location most of us associate with gambling is probably Las Vegas. Many of us have never heard of Macau but this tiny neighboring pensisula of Hong Kong is making waves in the gambling world as it continues to draw high-playing gamblers from China and the rest of the Far East. Macau is such a popular destination that it generates more revenue than Las Vegas and over 18 million people visited this area last year.
Macau is the only place in China where gambling is legal and this fact is being exploited by gamblers and investors alike, who flock to the area to make their fortunes. Gambling does not come cheap on Macau and most bets begin at $25. This is far from the popular $1 slot machine gambling available at Las Vegas. The gambling potential at Macau is huge, with the average table taking in $18,000 per day. Many hotels and projects are being built in Macau, with the most famous being the $800-million replica of the Vegas Venetian hotel and resort.
Gambling is not the only thing that draws people to Macau. It is a place steeped in history and many people flock there to appreciate the heritage. Chinese and Mediterranean architecture rubs shoulders in Macau and interesting excursions can be taken during the day, before the night's round of gambling begins again.
