- Tuesday, 24 Jan 2006
Rumors that the United Kingdom is preparing to host an international summit on online gambling this year were confirmed recently by Tessa Jowell, Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport. The conference’s aims are to encourage global participation in the field of policy-making toward the online gambling industry. The conference will address regulation of the gambling industry focusing on online casinos, along with consumer protection issues and market presence.
Licensed gambling firms, representatives of international governments and regulatory agencies have been invited to attend the summit which will focus on the promotion of internet gaming as a legitimate business, while addressing the need for increased consumer protection. Another issue to be addressed at the summit is organized crime and how it can be prevented from infiltrating and adversely affecting the online gaming world. Other topics for discussion include the advertizing of gambling related services and products along with the social repercussions associated with gambling addiction.
The United Kingdom has been one of the first countries in the world to legalize online gambling with its 2005 Gambling Act. Currently the government is working at regulating the online gambling operators providing services to British casino fans. The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has advised that although the 2005 Gambling Act was introduced to regulate new forms of gambling while providing increased protection for children, the country recognizes that policy-making is a global concern.
