British Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has issued a warning to internet gambling firms that persist in the use of promotional campaigns outside of British advertising regulations. The UK government’s tough new approach is backed up by strict penalties for gambling operators in violation of the law. The new approach which will be policed by the Gambling Commission may also involve the Crown Prosecution Service if gambling operators refuse to comply with guidelines that stipulate how an online casino or poker room can be marketed to casino fans in the UK.
The United Kingdom’s Gambling Act 2005 has increased the government’s control over the advertising of gambling services. However the new approach is intended to target only those gambling firms that continuously violate the law. Most gambling companies operating in the UK are familiar with UK advertising regulations and pose no threat to legislation.
Among the new penalties transgressors can expect to face are fines of up to 5000 pounds sterling for firms and up to two years imprisonment for convicted individuals. The move comes as part of a series of initiatives adopted by the British Gambling Commission to thoroughly regulate the online gambling industry and to provide more protection for casino fans. Currently UK residents that enjoy casino games are forced to play at offshore online casinos and poker rooms. However by 2007 online casinos will be able to operate legally from within the UK.
