- Tuesday, 25 Jul 2006
The UK-based gambling and betting group, Ladbrokes PLC, is still reviewing whether or not to accept US customers at its online casino sites as regulatory uncertainty and the recent arrest of David Carruthers, CEO of Bet On Sports, a leading gambling Internet site, hang in the balance. Ladbrokes wants to be careful not to abandon a potentially strong customer base, while avoiding criticism and possible prosecution by the US government.
A Ladbrokes spokesman refuted a recent newspaper report which claimed that it had decided to drop its US customer base. The report also stated that there would be an entry into online sports betting. ‘No decision has been made and sports betting were never part of the review,’ the spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires. What is really going on is the consideration that Ladbrokes is taking while reviewing whether or not to accept business from US gambling customers with regards to poker and other gambling games on the Internet.
The gambling company will provide an update on the review around or alongside the group's interim results on August 24th, 2006 the spokesman added. Currently, Ladbrokes does not accept any bets from US gambling customers. The decision to review its current policy follows the GBP 3.3 billion sale of the Hilton International Hotel division to its namesake, Hilton Hotel Corp. in February. Online casino fans will carefully watch the developments of the indictment of Bet On Sports’ CEO, as well as the way Ladbrokes will lean in its final decision about US customers.
