Adam Kagin, a 28-year-old from Oakland, was working for a financial services firm just six months ago. But this was not a satisfying life for the young man. So he decided to try his hand at gambling and becoming a professional poker player. Last week, Kagin played in one of the most famous poker tournaments in the world – the World Series of Poker – and finished ninth in the 600 person, US 2,000 dollar Buy-in round. Although disappointed with his overall placement, he did win the US 10,000 dollars needed for the main gambling event which ends August 10th, 2006.
‘I never thought I could (turn professional) until a friend of mine suggested that I consider trying to do it full time,’ said Kagin. ‘I did a spreadsheet and found out how much I could be making playing professionally. In the worst-case scenario, I would still be making slightly more money, have more free time, and not have a boss to answer to.’ All of the reasons presented by this gambling man definitely sound good when considering a career in professional poker. But is it really possible? Although many have found fame, fortune, and a lucrative career in poker gambling, more people find themselves out of money and in a state of financial debt.
What lies ahead for this gambling man is up to him and Lady Luck. Whether or not he will truly make his life one of professional poker and gambling is still unknown. But if his current success has any input in his decision, it looks like Adam Kagin might be the next famous poker star on the circuit.
