- Tuesday, 6 Jun 2006
As the locations for Britain’s first super casino are debated, religious groups in Kirklees are urging the public to fight plans for new gambling ventures to be based in the region. The creation of a casino in Kirklees is widely considered as part of the United Kingdom’s new approach to gambling, which will permit one regional super casino, eight large venues and a further eight smaller centers in the UK. Several church groups have united with the Salvation Army to protest against the government’s new Gambling Act, which is to be in full effect by September 2007.
While many advocates of the new Act state the introduction of gambling centers throughout the UK will boost employment and investment opportunities, those opposed cite problem gambling and gambling related social issues as major concerns. A petition urging Kirklees Council to refrain from submitting a formal proposal to the government's Casino Advisory Panel has been made. The council had previously indicated its interest in hosting some type of gambling establishment, but has confirmed that it is not one of the candidates bidding to host the super casino.
Under the government’s new plans, the regional super casino will contain forms of gambling which have never been seen before in the UK including jackpots of one million pounds. The decision on which locations will host the new gambling venues are expected to be made before the end of the month.
