In a continued crackdown against illegal gambling activity in several countries in the Far East, Vietnam official have announced that they have cracked a local gambling ring. Twenty five people were prosecuted for being involved in illegal and organized gambling. Two of the guilty parties were a traffic policeman, and another government official.
Major Nguyen Hoang Son from the Traffic Police Bureau under the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department and seven others were prosecuted on Thursday for organizing cockfighting gambling and nine others were prosecuted for a participating in the gambling activities. Son was from his post immediately after he and about 30 others were arrested at his home where cockfighting gambling was taking place.
According to the police report, Son often organized the gambling event at his house in Ho Chi Minh City with bets of dozens of millions Vietnamese dong, or thousands of U.S. dollars each fight. It is not known how long this gambling ring was in action, but continued police investigation will answer these questions. This kind of activity is totally illegal in Vietnam - all kinds of gambling, except for casinos designated for foreigners and overseas Vietnamese, are banned in the country.
