A recent report in an American newspaper regarding the number of teenagers who have visited gambling resorts has caused a stir. The report indicated that most American teenagers have visited a gambling resort or a casino-sponsored event. Casinos are a common sponsor for entertainment events for teenagers and young adults – even though there is always a strict rule never to have gambling available at these events.
Many casinos wish to come across as resorts which are perfect for a family holiday and they offer concerts and arcade type games for the children while their parents are busy gambling. The report indicated however, that the more that children are exposed to gambling resorts at an early age, the more likely that they will develop problem gambling habits in the future.
The casinos know that they are walking a fine line and need to ensure that they do not make gambling seem too attractive for the under-21s. The problem is that the entire resort is geared towards gambling so the children would be hard-pressed to find anything negative about gambling in these resorts. Underage adults are not allowed on the gambling floor and the parents can be fined heavily if they do not supervise their children accordingly. The problem is that casinos have a vested interest in keeping everyone happy – parent and children alike. After all – these children are the casinos’ future clientele,
