- Saturday, 18 Mar 2006
The KwaZulu-Natal Gambling Board has ruled that the gambling machine at Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World that recorded a R42.9 million win for Durban woman at the weekend seemingly malfunctioned, meaning that the recorded win is void and the money will not be paid out. The woman, an attorney by profession, however, vowed to sue the Gambling Board and the casino for the money that she says is legally hers.
The woman was reported to be relatively traumatized by the event. At first she could not believe her luck that she had won so much gambling money, but when she was informed that the gambling machine had malfunctioned she would not accept it. Chief Executive of the gambling board told the woman that the machine had been examined yesterday by investigators and found to have malfunctioned.
The gambling board stated that on every machine, a maximum payout is registered and listed in table form. It pointed out that none of the winning combinations on the gambling machines indicated that the R42.9 million was a winning option. The gambling board said that it must have been some electrical fault that caused the machine to send out the wrong winning amount, that the machine had been confiscated and was being thoroughly examined. They said that the mistake was most unfortunate, but it is written clearly on the machine that in the case of malfunction, the winning amount will not be paid out until the matter is investigated.
