The annual report examines the land-based gambling industry’s continued expansion and impact on national and state economies. Among the findings was that expansion has boosted nationwide employment in the gambling industry to over 354,000 people, who receive a total income of $12.6 billion dollars annually.

The report also showed that gambling taxes paid by the industry to state and local governments increased by five percent in 2005 to $4.92 billion. Racetrack-based casinos, or “racinos” as they are commonly known, grew to number 29 separate facilities in nine states. In 2005, these new gambling establishments grossed $3.12 billion dollars, up 9 percent from 2004. Racinos employ appro9ximately 17,000 people and last year paid $1.28 billion in direct gambling taxes to state and local governments.

Poker revenues also surged last year with both Nevada and New Jersey casinos reporting increased revenues of over 37 percent from 2004. Las Vegas strip is the most wealthiest gambling market in the U.S., generating over $6 billion dollars last year. Nevada is the richest gambling state, recording $11.6 billion dollars.
