- Monday, 29 May 2006
Nepal is the latest Asian country to experience the gambling phenomenon. However, unlike most countries, Nepal’s gambling world has proven equally popular with both sexes, and a new casino due to open next month is destined to appeal to women who enjoy gambling. The country’s seventh casino, Casino Shangrila, will be run by a female chief executive from India and will be managed by mostly female staff.
The gambling establishment will be run by entrepreneur Shalini Wadhwa, well known for her public relations and business skills in India. In taking on Casino Shangrila, Wadhwa will become the first woman to run a Nepalese casino. The casino will be built on the grounds of the newly upgraded five-star Hotel Shangrila, which will open just ahead of the Pokhara casino, initially planned to open first. Wadhwa, editor of "The Boss," "Voice of Women," and "Casino Times" magazines, is comfortably at home in the world of gambling. Her husband, Rakesh Wadhwa, is the executive director of Nepal's Recreation Center, the owner of the country's six existing gambling establishments.
Female executives in the Asian gambling industry are far less rare than in the West. Several women own and run some of Katmandu's finest gambling resorts. However, Nepal is yet to benefit from the female touch in the gambling market. Wadhwa will have a lot to prove but plenty of support doing so.
