- Thursday, 14 Jun 2007
It seems lately as the US is being left alone in its attempt to ban online gambling, as more and more countries are beginning to understand that a regulation could be a much wiser idea. According to “The Herald”, the next country to join that “revolution” could be South Africa, as the local government is expected to publish legislation regulating online gambling by the end of the year, ending the online casino ban in the nation. According to the newspaper, the Trade and Industry department plans to submit the bill to Parliament sometime around July.
Fungayi Sibanda, the chief director of the department, told “The Herald” that the main idea behind this move is to increase the government’s control over the online casino industry, in order to prevent illegal activities. As it seems right now, the bill will include measures to deal with illicit activities associated with online gambling, as well as measures to deal with minors who try to gamble online. The legislation was introduced in response to the National Gambling Board's advice that there is a need for legalizing and regulating online gambling rather than trying to ban the industry, as the US is trying to do.
If the legislation does come into effect, South Africa will join countries like the UK, Spain and Italy, where plans for a regulation of online casino sites have already started. At the other hand, the US has chose at the moment to go the opposite way, after passing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which bans all financial transactions involving online casino sites.
