 Gambling on Reality TV

- Thursday, 13 Oct 2005

Reality TV has not only revolutionized TV programming, but our gambling culture as well. Given their unique format, these shows are extremely popular among online gambling bookmakers. For instance, the last season of the hit show “American Idol” generated the most gambling activity out of any other show in the history of television. The reason why gambling on these shows is so widely common stems form the fact that they are all predicated on a similar concept which is to have a group of contestants competing against each other, where each week another contestant is eliminated from the competition. Viewers are gambling on which contestant will be the one left standing.

The reason why these shows generate such an overwhelming response in the online gambling circles is very much related to the fact that the participants who compete in these shows are actual people. This makes them more relatable in the eyes of the viewers to the point where they become emotionally invested in these shows. Gambling on their favorite contestant is some viewer’s way of identifying with that person.

The reality TV gambling craze is at full swing! Sportsbook, a website that specializes in sports gambling and casino gambling, is the first site to publish odds on two of the hottest shows this fall season: Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice” and the “The Apprentice Martha Stewart”, which is loosely based on the concept of its NBC counterpart. Sportsbook has posted odds on each of the contestants of the two shows.

Gambling odds makers like the chances Alla, a 31-year old salon owner and Josh, a co-founder and chief operating officer of a cosmetics company, as the contestants with the most chances to win “The Apprentice”. Both of them have received 6-1 odds of becoming Trump’s apprentice. Leading the pack on “The Apprentice Martha Stewart” is Carrie a 31-year old creative director from LA with 7-1 odds.
