- Tuesday, 18 Apr 2006
A popular gambling festival has been cancelled following the publication of guidelines by the United Kingdom’s Gambling Commissions despite the fact that its marketing campaign had already attracted a record number of participants. The Rivercard Poker Festival to be held at Old Trafford, Manchester in June was cancelled when new guidance issued by the Gambling Commission impacted upon the organizer’s ability to take responsibility for the event.
A statement issued by the organizer claimed that the event had been forcibly cancelled due to advertising restrictions. Following a high profile crack down on gambling advertisements within the United Kingdom, the Gambling Commission recently issued a Guidance Notice on Section 42 of the 1968 Gaming Act which restricts the advertising and marketing of gaming events. The organizer of the Rivercard Poker Festival also cited a lack of cooperation from the Gambling Commission as a major factor contributing to the cancellation.
The Gambling Commission recently came under attack from Conservative ministers at pains to point out that despite stern warnings issued to gambling operators last year, several operators continued to flout advertising legislation with little consequence. It is commonly thought that now the Commission will be at pains to enforce the existing legislation and penalize those breaching current advertising standards.
