- Tuesday, 28 Feb 2006
Lawrence Mack, a 57 year old military veteran has been arrested and charged with stealing more than $500,000 from his then-fiancée, three years ago. The man, who blames his gambling addiction for his period of weakness, managed to strip away at his lover’s savings over a three year period and used the money for gambling purposes on trips to Atlantic City. The problem was that the gambling was not very successful and he proceeded to loose all the money.
Mack managed to embezzle the money from his fiancée’s account after forging documents with which he added his name to her banking account, thus creating a joint account. Mack then had access to her money on an unauthorized basis and drew money every time he had a gambling urge. The gambling trips to Atlantic City were never a roaring success and every time he returned, he had to draw more money. When the woman discovered that the money was missing, she never thought that gambling would be the reason for her sudden empty bank account.
Mack admitted that he had a weakness and addiction for gambling. The courts ruled that Mack will pay back all the money he withdrew for gambling and sentenced him to between two to five years in prison for fraud and debauchery. Mack expressed regret over the matter and said that his biggest gamble was the fact that he lost his fiancée. | |
