- Tuesday, 3 Jan 2006
Online gambling giant, Party Poker, has recently signed an exclusive deal with British TV network Five. Under the terms of the agreement, the online gambling group will become the sole sponsor of the network’s broadcast of 3 premier poker tournaments that are scheduled to take place over the course of the next year. The TV coverage will air weekdays at midnight starting December of next year. This represents the largest deal signed by the British Network in the past decade, encompassing 72-hours of gambling oriented programming.
As part of the agreement, the British Network will also be working closely with the online gambling site to develop a website offering tournament information, poker tutorials, downloads and much more. He UK is the most evolved country in terms of gambling oriented programming. While Americans mostly turn to ESPN for coverage of major poker tournaments such as the World Series of Poker, UK gambling fans are exposed to more extensive poker coverage in more than just one channel.
Five's head of commercial development, Jonathan Lewis was quoted saying, “This is a great marriage between the editorial and commercial endeavors of Five's business. We realized very early on that gambling oriented programming was significantly outperforming station average audience levels in the late night slot”. Lewis also added, "We also saw the huge emergence of the online gambling sector and were able to capture this in one overall deal."
