- Friday, 5 May 2006
Last month’s media frenzy over the alleged gambling problems of Manchester United star Wayne Rooney is far from over. British media were quick to report that Rooney declined an invitation to a gambling for charity event this week, fuelling more rumors and speculation that the football star is suffering from gambling addiction.
The media attention Rooney faced last month culminated in the exposure of over one million pounds sterling in gambling debts. Further allegations that Rooney was involved in a gambling dispute with team mate Michael Owen also made front pages across the country, and the ensuing debate between Manchester fans, players and the club’s management helped to keep the story alive. This week Rooney’s decision to remain absent from the charity gambling event has again made headlines, along with the fact that Michael Owen has also issued a statement advising he will not be attending.
The gambling event was arranged by Chelsea and England football star, Frank Lampard, and former Liverpool player, Jamie Redknapp. Several high profile names in the British entertainment industry are expected to attend, along with football stars, TV and radio personalities and professional gamblers. All proceeds from the gambling event will go to charity.
