The former Canadian Minister of Justice, Doug Lewis, is suing CBC for libel as he accuses the company of damaging his good name. Lewis acted as Canada's Minister of Justice, as the country's Minister of Transport as well as Canada's Solicitor General. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation aired a TV show about online gambling and Lewis claims that his public image was damage as a result. Lewis was heading an online gambling software firm at the time, back in 2001, and the reporter on the show claimed that Lewis' company licensed its software to online gambling companies that cater for Canadian customers.
The legal stand of online gambling in Canada can be debated on, but Lewis said that non of the online gambling firms that his company worked with supplied online gambling services to Canadian players. The reporter said on the show that he personally played at an online casino featuring Lewis' company's software and even got money for his winnings. This means that Lewis did not say the truth on the show, as he claimed no services were offered to Canadian players.
Lewis rejects the claims and says that the money that the reporter got was a refund, as the no online gambling services are provided for players from Canada. Lewis believes that his appearance on the show damaged his public image, and wants to take CBC to court. CBC's lawyer stands behind the show and the broadcasting company said that online gambling is in some sort of a crossroad in Canada, and that the public is entitled of knowing that a paradox exists.
