- Saturday, 24 Mar 2007
Maybe they weren't looking for it, but it seems as the Canadian Province of Alberta is yet again making headlines in the online gambling industry. This time it is the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC), who is conducting a survey among its residents to find out how they feel about online gambling in overall, and more specifically about poker, blackjack and bingo. The survey first started through the phone, but it is now being conducted also online, hoping to reach as many people as possible. Nevertheless, and according to a AGLC's spokesman, even after the results will came in, it will take a long time before the local government allows Internet gambling websites from outside the province to operate on its jurisdiction.
The survey has already managed to provoke quite a debate, with the biggest opposition coming from Calgary's Catholic church, who's calling the willingness of the Alberta's government to allow online gambling "immoral". In addition, they claim that the AGLC is ignoring the possible side effects of this move, and not taking into account the social side of the act, possibly because of the huge amount of money involved. They also claim that the impact on Alberta's citizens would be much greater than any profits drawn online gambling licenses.
It's still early to predict the future of online gambling sites in Alberta, Canada, as it's not even sure that the citizens themselves will support the possible regulations of online casinos in this area. Even if they do, there's still a long way until we'll see any real progress in this ambitious program. With the local Catholic church opposing it, it won't be such an easy task for the supporters of online gambling.
