University of Glasgow to Study Gambling Habits

- Thursday, 13 Apr 2006

A new three-year project and study, backed by the University of Glasgow, will examine the gambling habits of Britons. The researchers will be approaching bettors in gambling venues such as casinos, betting shops, arcades and bingo halls. They will also be investigating those who partake in internet gambling and who play the lottery.

The study, announced to coincide with the weekend of the Grand National, aims to find out the motivations for gambling. The study plans to follow gambling careers over a three year period and will also address the issue of problem and compulsive gambling. The study hopes to find people with problem gambling habits who are willing to talk to the researchers and will examine whether they are aware of their problem habits or not.

Researcher Dr Gerda Reith will share in a grant of more than £184,000 from the Economic and Social Research Council. She said that with the liberalization of the gambling climate in Britain has lead to an increase in gamblers, but not much study or analysis has been done on their habits and motivations. The study will focus on the socio-economic status, ethnicity, gender and education of regular as well as problem gamblers Reith said. The study is important for those in decision making powers to understand what makes people become problem gamblers and how they can eventually help them.
