The term 'Roulette' which we have come to know from land-based and online casinos is derived from French, meaning a small wheel. It was introduced in the 17th century in France, by the famed mathematician Blaise Pascal, who has made numerous contributions to mathematics. The 'Pascal triangle' might ring a bell if your high school experience took place not too long ago, or you might remember 'Pascal' as a popular computer programming language. Some historians oppose the claim that Roulette originated in France and are convinced that it comes from China. According to them, Roulette was brought to Europe by Dominican Monks who were trading with the Chinese.
The roulette wheel became very popular when Prince Charles, ruler of Monaco introduced casino gambling to the region as a way of alleviating the financial problems in the area. The roulette wheel which was introduced by the Prince was actually the old version of the casino game. The modern version did not appear until 1842 when Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc invented the single '0' roulette game. The game was eventually brought to America in the beginning of the 19th century where, to further increase odds, a second zero was introduced.
The roulette wheel spread across Europe over this period and gained a great deal of popularity in the United States during the California Gold rush, becoming one of the most famous casino games. The "King of Casino Games", associated with the glamour of the casinos in Monte Carlo has further evolved since its early days and has justly become an online casino favorite. | |
