While South African casino fans await the government’s decision on the legalization of online gambling, a new code of practice is being introduced in the country’s land-based casinos. Representatives from major casino groups have signed the country’s first national gambling industry code of conduct, which is the first of its kind outside the U.S. The code, which seeks to provide a safe and secure gambling experience for South African land casino players, may also have consequences for the online gaming industry.
Casino Association chair Peter Bacon, while announcing the code of conduct in Cape Town, has stated that its purpose is to unite all gambling operators running land-based casinos in South Africa and to promote a culture of responsible gambling in the country. The Casino Association represents the majority of licensed casinos in South Africa. Among the gambling operators to endorse the new code of conduct are Gold Reef Casino Resorts, Peermont Global and Sun International.
While the online gambling industry in South Africa has followed world trends and revenues have increased substantially over the last five years, the popularity of land-based casinos has also grown among South African casino players. Since 1998, gambling operators have increased the total revenues from land-based casinos to over 12 billion rand taken from the country’s nine provinces. | |
