Employers in the United Kingdom are concerned about recent statistics, which show that millions of employees are gambling online during work hours. The problem is twofold: Firstly, gambling should not be done on work’s time and, secondly, gambling online invites unwanted viruses and spam into an organization’s information system. The first weeks of April alone showed a dramatic increase of employees gambling online, probably in response to the Grand National which is due to take place in the United Kingdom very soon.
Scan Safe, a web security manager, which polled over 1 billion web requests during the first fortnight of April, reported these statistics about online gambling. Scan Safe also showed the online gambling during work hours was up by 73% as a lead up to the Grand National. The company reported that 40% of employees use their work hours for personal gambling needs – usually for at least an hour a day.
One of the most popular horses in the Grand National, Hedgehunter, seems to be a favorite among employees who do their gambling online. Scan Safe reports that this horse’s name was searched for the most among the gambling public. It will be interesting to see what moves companies and organizations will take to ensure that employees keep their minds on their work and away from the tracks!
