The typical stereotypical image of a gambling addict is usually a male who cannot control his compulsive habits and gambles away his house and home. While this image may fit the bill for many men in the United States, the truth is that many women in this country are gambling addicts. A couple of decades ago, it was almost unheard of for women to be classified as gambling addicts. These days, however, more and more women are turning to professionals for help in their addiction.
Recent information put out by the National Council on Problem Gambling showed that as much as 50% of those people who sought professional help for their gambling addition were women. This is way above the numbers that were seen twenty years ago. The National Council on Problem Gambling explained that women were simply drawn to casinos – both online and land-based ones – for their entertainment factors. In the past, women used gambling as a means to add a bit of excitement to their usually mundane lives and were not exposed to casinos to such a degree that they could become addicted.
The question remains why so many women seek help for their gambling problems, as in proportion to the number of men with gambling problems, 50% is a high number. Perhaps it is that women feel more responsibility toward their families and society and will do whatever it takes to overcome their compulsive behavior patterns.
