- Sunday, 9 Apr 2006
Gambling is an illegal pastime in Delaware but this did not stop several gambling bars popping up across the state. Delaware police, along with the state's Special Investigations Section, the Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcements and the Army National Guard, conducted several raids on specific joints that were known to be dealing with gambling devices. The raid itself yielded 23 poker machines and just over $9,000 in cash from six bars.
Delaware police had initially stationed undercover police in the gambling bars to collect information about the illegal gambling operations. When the raid was finally conducted on March 30th, the police knew who and what they were looking for. As a result, they were able to seize video poker machines, money and other gambling paraphernalia. The managers of the six bars face misdemeanor charges and their alcohol licenses are in danger since they allowed illegal activities to take place on the same premises where they sold the drinks.
This gambling raid was a classic example of all the state's forces working together to combat a common problem. For instance, the Army National Guard, while not directly involved with the problems of gambling in society, provided the trucks to carry away the equipment and poker machines that were seized in the raid.
