We are all aware of, and understand the logic behind, the requirement by many governments to insist on warning labels to accompany advertisements for alcohol and tobacco products. This is because smoking and drinking are considered “adult” pastimes and are addictive and can be bad for one’s health if used excessively. As part of its move to legalize gambling, the United Kingdom created a special Gambling Commission whose job it is to slap certain restrictions and requirements on the industry. One such restriction is to require all advertisements for casinos and other forms of gambling to carry a warning label.
Just as cigarette advertisements come with health warnings that smoking can be addictive and/or can cause cancer, so too will gambling advertisements be required to carry warnings about the addictive dangers of gambling. These gambling warning notices might have to be displayed at all casinos, internet wagering sites and betting shops. It has long been known that the Gambling Commission wants to be move away from Vegas-style wagering and, instead, adopt a regulated and safe industry in the UK.
By forcing casinos to display these warnings, the Gambling Commission is hoping that people will become more aware of the dangers of this pastime. They will keep in mind the fact that gambling can cause addiction and compulsive behavior patterns and will make wise choices when next visiting a casino.
