- Friday, 12 May 2006
Since 2000, the Responsible Gambling Council of Canada has been touring Ontario with its play, “Caught in the Game” to hit home the important message to high school students that gambling can become addictive if not done responsibly. In the past six years, over 90,000 Ontario students have seen the play and the Responsible Gambling Council is now ready to take it further and show the play to high school students in Nova Scotia.
A Nova Scotia group, sponsored by the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation, will tour this area and it hopes to bring the same gambling message to local high school students as the one delivered to the ones in Ontario. The Responsible Gambling Council noted that Canadian high school students were usually well informed about other social dangers such as alcohol and drugs but were less educated about gambling addiction. The council felt a strong need to bring more awareness about the issue to students on a national level in a bid to avoid compulsive behavior patterns in the future.
Gambling is not a new pastime to Canadian students. Scratch cards, poker and sportsbetting are common forms of entertainment. A frightening statistic put out by the Responsible Gambling Council is that youngsters are 2-4 times more likely than adults to become addicted to gambling.
