- Monday, 22 Jan 2007
One of the online gambling industry’s largest companies has recently fired dozens of Costa Rican employees. This online gambling group is the latest firm to significantly downsize its Costa Rica operations. Last month another leading online casinos company announced similar plans. With the passing of the UIGEA or Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, many online casino companies are finding themselves going out of business or seriously downsizing due to the impact of this law.
Costa Rica, for many years, has served as the Mecca of online gambling catering to the North American market. This country’s economy suffered a major blow when another leading online gambling firm made headlines with its nearly 1,500 employees laid off during the summer following the arrest of its CEO on US soil.
The Costa Rican online gambling industry is believed to employ over 5,000 people in some capacity. It is the third largest industry in this Central American country after telecommunications and tourism. Online gambling operators are concerned that the Costa Rican government will not remain committed to protecting the online casino industry from pressures brought on by the US Justice Department. Rumors have surfaced that a new call center for the online gambling company will soon open in Panama, Antigua or Curacao. Surely online gambling fans of this leading online casino will be waiting and following to see if and when the new call center will open so they can get on with their online gambling.
