- Tuesday, 27 Mar 2007
The United Kingdom is constantly providing us with news about online gambling, and this week isn't any different. As a part of the greater effort of the British government, led by British Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, to regulate the industry, it has been announced that online casinos based anywhere other than Europe and Gibraltar will not be allowed to advertise in the UK, unless they apply and receive permission to do so from the government. Although nothing is official yet, as the deadline for this decision to go into effect is on September 1, 2007, it seems as not only the online gambling sites themselves will be regulated, but also their advertising campaigns.
According to Ms. Jowell, the thought behind this peculiar idea is to protect gamblers from online gambling sites that don't stand up to the new British's standards. Such sites might harm the local online casino industry and its gamblers, which stands in total contradiction to the idea of protecting the British gambling community from any invasion of negative elements and keep the local industry as safe, and clean, as possible
As a reminder, the British government, in contrary to the US, has chosen a regulatory way to deal with online gambling. Since the 2005 Gambling Act was passed, the government, led by Tessa Jowell, has made several steps in the direction of online casino's regulation. The laws that were passed will make sure that the online gambling world of tomorrow will be safer, cleaner, and much more fun - at least in the UK.
