- Thursday, 10 Nov 2005
In this day and age, blind people can play poker and other card games thanks to the invention of Braille cards. Online gambling has been out of reach for blind people so far because there aren’t any online casinos that cater to the blind. All of this is about to change! Blind people can now play poker online thanks to new revolutionary gambling software that reads aloud what is displayed on the screen. The new gambling software is available on a website called AllinPlay. It was created by three of University of Massachusetts students Jeremie Spitzer, Paul Silva and Tim Keenan.
They got the idea when a blind friend of theirs (Tim) mentioned that he is interested in playing cards online also, while the two were gambling online. The two then came up with the idea of creating a gambling software that both the blind and those who are able to see will be able to use at the same time. They started working on an interface that features a screen-reader which is a tool commonly used by blind people. This tool had never been used for the purpose of online gambling before.
After extensive testing, the three finally released their gambling software in 2002. Initially, it featured Crazy Eights which was followed by Five Card Draw Poker. Texas Hold 'em is their latest creation, which is now being tested. The gambling software is expected to be available soon on their website.
