According to a recent research made by Ontario’s Responsible Gaming Council, one of every five Ontarians plays online poker in one of the various online gambling web sites. At first the study was severely criticized due to the small sample of people – only around 1,000 respondents, aged 18 or older – but the results are considered to be accurate within 3 percentage points. The most interesting part of the study lies in the fact that online gambling, gambling sports included, loses popularity among all age groups, except in the game of online poker which saw an increase of 1.4 percent.
According to the Council, the growth in online gambling play had caused an increase in players who are switching from playing poker as a hobby to playing poker as an occupation. The poll, which was made via a random telephone survey, also showed that 16 percent of the respondents believe that playing poker at an online gambling site is a decent way of earning money and 4 percent even consider playing online poker as a full time job.
Another recent survey, this time made in the US, shows that there are currently 2,000 online gambling sites worldwide accepting bets on sports or poker. The poll, made by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, also showed that there are more than 850,000 men aged 18 to 22 in the US that play at online gambling sites or bet on gambling sports at least once a month, and that is twice as much as in last year. | |
