 Understanding Gambling Odds

- Monday, 17 Oct 2005

The use of math is required in order to apply the practice of odds and probabilities when gambling on poker. Leaning how to calculate the odds and probabilities in a poker game stems will help you to avoid making bad decision when it comes to gambling with your money. Naturally, the player who makes correct decisions consistently stands to make most money in the long run.

What is the difference between calculating odds and probability? Probability is the possibility of something happening. For example, when the weatherman reports that there is a 20 percent possibility that it will rain, it means that the probability of it rain is 20 percent.

On the other hand, odds can be regarded as a different way of expressing probabilities. We use odds instead of probabilities when discussing gambling games such as poker. Since it’s a different way of representation, we represent odds by using 2 numbers separated by a colon such as 3:1, instead of a decimal number that is used in order to note probabilities. The abovementioned example notes 3 to 1 odds of something happening.
