- Wednesday, 19 Oct 2005
Haley Barbour who is the governor of the state of Mississippi is in favor of allowing offshore gambling ships to be situated on land in order to minimize the structural threat from Hurricanes. Several of the 13 gambling facilities operating in Biloxi, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis have suffered severe damages as a result of Hurricane Katrina, ripping walls and tossing barges onto buildings and highways.
Aside from minimizing potential damages in the future, Barbour envisions that moving these floating gambling facilities a few hundred feet on land will also create job opportunities for a lot of needy people, which is something that can provide the local economy with a much needed boost. Barbour supports an onshore gambling bill that calls for some drastic changes in Mississippi’s gambling law.
Even though the governor is in favor of moving these floating casinos a short distance onto terra firma, he is against letting gambling expand into counties or cities where not permissible by law. | |
