The United Kingdom government has been vocal and active in regulating the world of online gambling. Under the leadership of the Culture Secretary in the British government, Ms. Tessa Jowell, the country is making progress in legalizing the online gambling sites and protecting gamblers in doing so. Part of the big picture is also addressing issues of advertising online gambling, which on the face of things is going in a different direction.
The question was raised a while ago, as lawmakers and online gambling industry insiders were contemplating whether advertising online gambling constitutes aiding and abetting casinos. If so, then the United States law will ban any such activity and advertising. But that goes for the US. Regarding the UK, advertising is also being tackled, though in a slightly different angle.
The UK will outlaw advertising online gambling at casinos that are located outside the country’s territories, Europe and Gibraltar. An online gambling site that wishes to advertise in the UK will have to apply for permission and prove to a committee of sorts that it adheres to rules and regulations that keep with the British standards. The UK clearly ties between online gambling and advertising the industry, as will the US most likely do. The difference in approaches by the two governments is clear, however. The UK being much more welcoming, organized and thoughtful of the industry and the gamblers while the US categorically banning everything to do with online gambling.
