- Tuesday, 4 Oct 2005
Recent talks about changing gambling legislation in the UK have sparked some official debate about the repercussions of making gambling laws more lax. While the pro gambling lobby in the UK has been gaining momentum, there are some voices in the government that oppose the lifting of restriction on gambling the in UK. They believe that it could ultimately lead to an increase in problem gambling.
Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary has promised that the UK gambling industry will be regulated and monitored with a close eye to help prevent problem and underage gambling should the current laws be amended. The proposed legislation will also cover online gambling which as of now is still a bit of a gray area when it comes to the laws in the UK. There is also discussion of creating a super casino in the UK that would usurp much of the UK’s land based gambling. The mega casino would be based on the Las Vegas model and the revenues and taxes generated from the gambling activities would get filtered back to the public coffers.
Peter Dean of the Gambling Commission who is pushing for the reforms and relaxation of gambling regulations in the UK made this comment: "Responsible providers of gambling want the cachet and the respectability that a license from the Gambling Commission will provide. And that will provide some assurance to those who go on those sites that the sites are properly run." | |
