- Tuesday, 11 Apr 2006
The National Council of Problem Gambling in Singapore is tacking the issue of problem gambling by funding a year long program of plays, lectures and workshops in schools and organizations. One of the more successful ventures by the council is a play put on by Drama Box which deals with a true story about the effects of problem gambling. The play is currently being performed across Singapore.
The Mandarin theatre group is just one out of five entertainment organizations which are backed by the National Council of Problem Gambling to reach out to more Singaporeans and raise awareness on the different issues arising from problem gambling. The other four organizations include Care Corner Counseling Center, Society of Moral Charities, Shan You Counseling Center and Teck Whye Secondary School, all of which will be holding public talks and forums on the problem gambling throughout the year.
A spokesperson for the council said that problem gambling was just as much a social issue as drugs and alcohol. He said it was not as visible as other problems, and was therefore easy to miss the signs of this problem. By addressing this issue at high school level, the council is able to get out of the children and young adults what they would need if encountered with problem gambling and thus would be able to help problem gamblers. | |
