Both Media Matrix and Nielsen NetRatings have claimed lately that the traffic to online gambling sites was significantly lower in October, apparently due to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Judging by those results, reader may think that US citizens have abandoned the online gambling industry, at least temporarily. Well, that may not be so true according to the latest ScanSafe report which was released last week.
ScanSafe is a global web security company, who’s Global Threat Repots is based on real-time analysis from over 5 billion web requests a month. According to the October report, which was released days ago, there was a 40 percent increase in the US-based requests for online gambling related web sites. “Just as everyone else, we also anticipated a drop in visits online gambling sites because of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, but that’s not what happened” says Dan Nadir, vice president of ScanSafe. “We think that one explanation may be that online players were looking for alternatives, but that can’t really be proven”added Nadir. In another area, ScanSafe also detected in the last month an increase of 15 percent in spyware and adware, following a 21 percent increase in September.
Time will tell if it was ScanSafe that was right or if the other two companies correctly diagnosed the online gambling market. Although experts around the world predicted a certain drop in the number of bets coming from US-based gamblers in the months following the anti-online casino bill, most of them also agreed that the US online gambling industry is expected to recuperate sooner than everyone thinks.
