- Monday, 9 Jan 2006
It seems that in the world of gambling tournaments that poker players have all the fun. But this just isn't the case when you are discussing the gambling worlds top tournament, the World Series of Blackjack, where blackjack players from around the globe fight to become the top player. The gambling tournament was held in Ute Mountains Casino in Towoac, Colorado from January 6th-7th. In a crowd of professionals and amateurs alike, names like Regina "BJ Sweety" Guzior, Darrell "Rock 'n Roll" Arnold, and Ken Smith could be seen on the tables and in the audience. In a drastic change from the previous two years, this year the pros have their work cut out for them. In a bold format change by GSN, The Network for Games, host of the gambling franchise World Series of Blackjack, the players in the taped finals are no longer 'by invitation only' as in the previous two years, but now are the winners of different satellite events being held around the country. Now amateurs and pros alike have to duke it out for the 40 seats in the televised finals from Las Vegas. By tournaments end however, none of the pros ended up a winner of the coveted seat to the gambling finals in Las Vegas. That prize was won by Scottie Black of Cal Springs, Arizona. A twenty-four year old amateur, Scotty had won his $100 buy-in to the tournament by gambling and winning, a weekly $10 pre-tournament the Ute Mountain Casino holds on its gaming floor. And who knows? Just as Moneymaker parlayed his $40 internet buy-in to $2.5 million dollars in 2003, Black just might be the next big thing in the gambling world.
