- Friday, 21 Jul 2006
The period leading up to the June/July World Cup soccer tournament was extremely busy for the sports gambling industry. Soccer fans flocked to gambling locations to place bets on their favorite sports teams. Land based casinos were just as popular as online gambling sites that took bets on the outcome of the biggest sporting event to take place in the past four years. As the top teams were slowly eliminated from the tournament, gambling reached an all-time high as ecstatic crowds rushed to place their bets on the final game between France and Italy.
The Italian team was finally crowned Champions of the Soccer World and sports gambling quieted down almost overnight. Many gambling sites are still taking bets relating to the World Cup, but these bets border on the frivolous such as what caused French player Zinedine Zidane to head-butt Marco Materazzi in the finals. With the next World Cup still four years away from now – the next one is due to take place in South Africa – there is not much material for World Cup gambling available out there.
The next big sports gambling period we are now entering is the American Major League Baseball games. Sports gambling is already picking up as Americans wager on what is known as their favorite national pastime. While sportsbetting follows the more popular games in the industry, gamblers can always find something to bet on at sportsbetting sites, whether they are golf fans or horse-racing lovers.
