US media has been covering several stories related to the online gambling industry this week, and an additional aspect presented was the release of a white paper by the American Gambling Association on internet gambling. The white paper which coincided with the 10th Anniversary Research Series discusses the current online gambling market, current U.S. policies, proposed legislation and its possible impact.
The white paper was part of the AGA’s insistence that the US Congress leads and funds an 18 month extensive study on the online gambling industry. This study would be a pre-requisite before deciding on the future on the online gambling industry in the United States, in wake of the proposals for its complete banning which are currently being pushed for at legislative levels. The study would examine the industry as a whole and investigate whether a regulated and controlled industry is better than an illegal one.
The white paper includes detailed information on the current online gambling market, including the sorts of games being presented, the types of companies providing online gambling and where they are located, the payment methods available for online punters, the regulatory arrangements in place for online gambling, and existing tax rates. It investigates the history of criminal and public enforcement of online gambling laws at the state and national level, as well as the history of legislative proposals to control internet gambling. Finally, the paper includes an in-depth look at the advantages and disadvantages of the legalization of intra-state internet gambling in the United States.
