- Monday, 12 Jun 2006
The latest figures from a survey conducted by the Pew Research Centre have indicated that 70 percent of Americans think legalized gambling encourages people to gamble more than they can afford. This figure is up from 62 percent in 1989. The gambling survey followed a call by the American Gaming Association (AGA), the land casino industry's lobbying arm, for a Congressional investigation into online casino gambling.
Previously, the AGA has declined to comment on the rising number of gambling fans preferring to gamble at online casinos, stating that the organization is “neutral” toward internet gambling issues. However, several gambling firms have expressed relief that the AGA is finally making its positions known.
Similarly, land-based gambling group MGM Mirage have issued a statement saying the time has come for internet gambling to be regulated by states similar to land-based casinos. The gambling firm is also in favor of taxation, which would provide a lucrative revenue stream for each state.
