A popular session held at this year’s GIGSE entitled "State of the Industry - an Overview of the Market" has given gambling delegates an insight into just how far the online gambling industry has progressed in recent years. Facilitated by Warwick Bartlett of Global Betting and Gaming Consultants UK, the presentation focused on the growth experienced by the online gambling industry in all its different sectors and provided some fascinating insights into the factors contributing to their growth. The workshop also encouraged discussion and debate on the negative factors in the industry – specifically a lack of positive PR to combat negative perceptions of gambling.
According to Bartlett, lobbying activities carried out by the online gambling industry are insufficient and not well coordinated. A disappointing level of funding usually goes hand in hand with efforts to lobby on behalf of the gambling industry. Bartlett also pointed out that fighting individual legal battles is not necessarily effective in changing the way the gambling industry is viewed by many in society. Laws are changed by creating a need for change among the people, he said, and the electorate must first influence the politicians who change the law.
Emphasizing the positive nature of the online gambling industry, Bartlett pointed to the numerous employment opportunities it provides, along with taxation revenue for some governments. Bartlett concluded the workshop by saying that online gambling is a widely accepted pastime and that most citizens are in favor of legalization and not prohibition.
