- Monday, 19 Jun 2006
According to analysts in the online gambling industry, the Italian government appears to be in no hurry to lift its ban on international gambling sites despite threatened litigation from several gambling operators. The directive the government issued to Italian ISPs earlier in the year to block traffic from blackballed sites has remained in place, despite high profile legal proceedings initiated by the United Kingdom’s Remote Gambling Authority.
The total number of gambling sites to which casino players in Italy are now denied access to has reached 586. This number was boosted recently by a second government list which outlawed an additional 35 online gambling sites and reportedly includes several major players in the online gambling industry along with two Italian online casino operators.
While the new list has outraged gambling fans, many believe it will not fail in drawing attention from the EU Commission. Just last week, the Commission extended its deadline to Finland in order to give the country more time to justify its state monopoly on gambling. The case against Finland was brought to the EU Commission by gambling operator Ladbrokes, which complained about the Finnish government denying Finnish casino fans access to the firm’s site. | |
