The American Gambling Association (AGA) has made headlines in recent weeks for its call for a Congress investigation into online gambling. However, according to the organization’s annual gaming survey, some gambling fans are experiencing stronger feelings of negativity toward the industry than in previous years, prompting several analysts to fear that some type of backlash against the online gambling world may be inevitable.
The AGA’s annual survey revealed that only 50 percent of respondents, the lowest figure since 2000, agreed with the survey’s statement that “casino gambling is perfectly acceptable for anyone.” 18 percent, the highest figure in six years, disagreed. Respondents also stated that online gambling sites do not go out of their way to prevent compulsive gambling and incidents involving underage gambling, despite a strong message from the industry that gambling problems are as much a concern to operators as they are to players, law enforcement agencies and charitable organizations.
While the AGA’s president, Frank Fahrenkopf, admits that the survey’s results are a mixed bag, he points out that more Americans are participating in online gambling than ever before. The public’s acceptance of online gambling sites has increased in recent years and usually ranges between 51 to 57 percent in favor of online gambling. Over 800 adults took part in the survey, which was conducted on behalf of the AGA by Luntz Maslansky Strategic Research.
