- Tuesday, 28 Mar 2006
In a very pro-gambling op-end this week, the LA Times presented an article that was written by David Carruthers of online gambling site Bet On Sports. The article presented the sentiment of many Americans on the street which claimed that the American government’s bill to make online gambling illegal through the limitation of payment options and server usage is futile.
The article claimed that the main problem that the government should be dealing with, is not to make the gambling industry illegal, but it should rather regulate an industry that exists. Not only does this industry exist, but gambling is one of the most thriving industries at present. Anything related to gambling and online casinos turned to gold in 2005 with profits of these companies souring, shares booming and IPOs happening frequently. The government should accept the fact that the gambling industry is out there and find ways to regulate and deal with it in an organized manner.
The article stated that trying to shut down a multibillion-dollar gambling industry with a consumer demand that includes an estimated 8 million Americans annually is pointless. Online poker and online casino gambling is now a $12-billion-a-year industry. For example, Americans place bids of more than $500 million on this year's Super Bowl alone. The article concludes that the revenue that the government could make from this thriving industry is reason alone to regulate and monitor it. It claims that the more regulated a business is, the less chance of consumer harm being done.
