Gambling in the United Kingdom has never been more popular or grossed so much income in previous years. This information was gleaned by a recent survey run by Nottingham Trent University that released statistics relating to the gambling habits of the English population. While it has always been a well-known fact that the British love wagering and gambling, nobody realized how popular this pastime had really become and how much money the industry was generating.
Nottingham Trent University reported, for example, that the British public spent an astounding $89-billion on gambling last year. The figures were not always this high. Only in recent years did the British government relax its laws relating to gambling and, as a result, the gambling industry has flourished. The British people can be found placing bets at any of the 130 casinos and 850 betting shops nationwide. There is, of course, a flip side to this success story, with over 370,000 people addicted to gambling in the United Kingdom.
It will be interesting to see how the gambling industry reacts next year when the United Kingdom Gambling Act comes into effect. This law will essentially regulate the industry and keep tighter tabs on new and existing casinos – both online and land based ones.
